I am researching and teaching law, mainly European Union Law, and endeavour publishing and engaging in critical debate on how the EU impacts on societies in its Member States (mainly from socio-legal perspectives) Since 12/2020, I hold the Synnott Family Chair for EU law at University College Cork, in Ireland, where I also direct the Centre of European Integration, and a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence. From 11/2014 - to 11/2020, I was professor at Queen's University Belfast, after 7 years as professor at University of Leeds (during which time I was awarded a Jean Monnet ad personam Chair) and 7 years as professor at Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg (Germany, during which time I was awarded the Jean Monnet chair). Before that I was Wissenschaftliche Assistentin at University of Bremen, Germany (similar to senior lecturer), and in my pre-academic life in Hessen (1991-1993) and Berlin (1989-1992) I wrote gender equality legislation, while also leading a subdepartment in the last post. I finished my PhD in 1992 (University of Hamburg, based on a short stint as lecturer at Bundeswehruniversitaet Hamburg, but mainly finished while working for Berlin and Hessen).
